Music and art enthusiasts! Get out those calendars, those red and black pens, and put them to work for you. The upcoming Art Basel 2013 schedule of events is thickening, and even now, we've got some serious news you want to hear.
We're more than stoked to say Kendrick Lamar is officially performing at a private party Wednesday, Dec. 4, at the Mana Wynwood Sound Studio, and reservations are now open for those looking to scoop a table.
The love-child of Flaunt magazine and 3P Productions (you should remember them from the III Points festival back in early October), Lamar's live performance stands as the partnership's Art Basel kick-off party, in conjunction with the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami. They'll be announcing more serious shows and headliners to fill up the week in coming days. Tickets for Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington as Darkside, Thursday, Dec. 5, are already on sale.
Miami's favorite hip-hop DJ DZA, resident and head master of the weekly Peachfuzz parties, will offer up his best jams for the Kendrick crowd in an opening set. Rumors are there will be even more heat coming on the closer.
But Art Basel is about art, so keeping in line with the reason for the season, Flaunt and Vanessa Beecroft will fill the Mana Wynwood space with installations and over-the-top performance pieces. Beecroft is the artist behind the current stage design of Kanye's Yeezus tour, for which Kendrick Lamar is the opening act.
According to a press release, Beecroft will feature five replicas from past performances (1994-2008), and one new "Open Call" Performance: VB72. The entire piece will feature 140 women, wherein the replica performances will act as a choir in a Greek tragedy, the new performance piece acting as the tragedy. This is the first time in which several of Beecroft's performance will happen at once." And who knows, maybe we'll get lucky and Mr. West will make an appearance.
David Sinopoli, of 3P Productions, said he's excited to bring the party back to Mana following the success of the inaugural III Points.
"Our hope is that with the global art and music community in town, they can see Mana Wynwood as an option to do really spectacular big, versatile, alternative events in Wynwood," he said. "We're trying to position Mana Wynwood as a convention center with an edge, without losing our obligation to Wynwood to keep in-character and in alignment with what Wynwood is. From the Kendrick show, to the Darkside show, to these other things that we're planning, they're all going to be diverse and different so people can get a vibe of what's possible in this big space."
