A letter from our editor

What a difference three weeks makes.

Late last month, I wrote to offer you an ad-free online reading experience for Miami New Times and New Times Broward-Palm Beach in exchange for a monthly or annual paid subscription. Then the novel coronavirus made landfall.

Trying times are ahead for all of us. But for New Times and many of our loyal advertisers, the viral storm blew in like a hurricane, wreaking immediate and devastating damage. Because of the hit to our bottom line, New Times employees have taken bruising pay cuts and face the even more frightening prospect of layoffs.

All this happened at a time when the going was already tough for American media organizations. Today tech giants siphon more than two-thirds of the digital ad revenue that used to stay in local communities. Even before the coronavirus, a lot of money that used to stay in Miami was leaving town.

New Times has tried to recoup our share with new advertising models on desktop and mobile. But keeping the (virtual) presses running and producing top-quality stories like ours is expensive.

Like the rest of you who love Miami, we’re in this for the long haul. We’re committed to weathering this storm and continuing to bring you breaking stories, along with arts, music, and food news.

But that’s neither easy nor cheap, and for our small staff, it is becoming increasingly challenging.

So I urge you to support our ongoing membership campaign.

One final note: Local business owners are also the people who populate much of our editorial coverage. We write about their venues. We salute them with Best of Miami™ awards. (And sometimes we get under their skin.) We also eat, drink, shop, or otherwise plunk down our own cash to avail ourselves of their wares. To us, they’re like family. Please support them too.
