Miami's Five Best Concerts This Week

Wheaties may be the breakfast of champions, but in Miami, lechón asado is the meal of legends. That, of course — as revealed in a recent New Times interview — is what gives drummer Patrick Hallahan and My Morning Jacket the "ability to play instruments with balanced levels of aggression and delicacy," much like a smokin' chunk of roasted pork fresh out of La Caja China.

Miami soul, as explained by Ketchy Shuby frontman and singer, Jason Hernandez-Rodriguez to New Times back in 2013, "means soul music from the bottom of the South. It's the bright lights, with the grind and hustle mentality, with integrity and heart." Watch "the purveyors of Miami soul" keep that musical spirit alive at Bardot this Thursday.

Churchill's may be known for booking solid local acts, but the Little Haiti rock gem does a pretty good job bringing in national talent as well. This week, the Appleseed Cast will be traveling all the way from Lawrence, Kansas, and tearing it up at 5501 NE Second Ave. for a night of indie rock.

"Everything you hear that has a beat, that has a pulse, is a derivative of Afro roots," Jose Elias, the man behind the 17th annual Afro Roots World Music Festival, explained to New Times in a recent interview. And no other worldbeat musician epitomizes Elias' definition better than "the Godfather of Gnawa music" himself, Hassan Hakmoun.
