A former standout at Miramar High School, St Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey was presumably in town this week visiting family for the holidays while serving a suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. While sitting in an SUV last night with a cousin and two young relatives in Miami Gardens, the NFL player was the victim of a drive-by shooting. Bailey, who is 25, was shot twice in the hip and head. The driver of the car, Antwan Reeves, was also shot multiple times.

Bailey is now in critical but stable condition at Aventura Hospital and will undergo surgery. Though he was shot in the head, the injury is not believed to be life-threatening.

According to Miami Gardens Police, the incident happened at around 8:45 p.m. last night. A car described as a light-colored, four-door sedan, possibly a Buick Regal, pulled up and opened fire on the car. Bailey and Reeves were shot. The other passenger and the two children were unharmed.

The incident happened in front of a residence in the 19800 block of NW 38th Place. The location is just a five-minute drive from the Miami Dolphins' Sun Life Stadium.

NBC Miami obtained footage of the black SUV Bailey was in at the time of the incident.

The victims managed to drive themselves to Jackson Memorial Hospital but were then transported to Aventura Hospital.

“We are aware Stedman Bailey was involved in an incident this evening," the Rams said in a statement issued late last night. "We have spoken with Stedman and he is in the hospital in critical, but stable, condition. We are gathering facts about the situation and will provide updates as we learn more."

After starring at Miramar High, Bailey was recruited by West Virginia where he set the single season record for receiving yardage and tied for most touchdown receptions in a season. Bailey would forgo his senior season and was drafted by the Rams in the third round of the 2013 draft. His time in the NFL has been rocky. He was suspended four games last season for violating the league's  performance-enhancing substances policy, and again this season for violating the substance abuse policy.
