Whatever you call your male parent -- pops, dad, father, papa, man-whose-seed-enabled-my-existence, the-reason-I'm-so-fucked-up -- and whatever your relationship is with your one or two dads, we all appreciate a good song about daddyness.

In honor of Father's Day, which is this Sunday (go buy a card or something), and to celebrate your complex relationship with the man who partly made you, we've put together a few songs that celebrate the word father or dad or papa.

Being a dad is tough work. And usually, your kids end up loathing you. These songs are proof of that sad fact. Enjoy!

6. George Michael's "Father Figure"

Let's start with a song not at all about fathers, but about a closeted gay man singing to a lady. If memory serves, he wrote this for his bestie Brook Shields who he liked, but didn't "like"... Wait, that was the "Careless Whisper" story. Anyway, it's a good one. Feel free to use it when talking about any of GM's songs.

Maybe you don't like your dad, but if you're lucky enough to have a queer father figure as hot as George Michael in your life, congrats. You gotta love how this video is clearly a gay man's idea of what's sexy in the '80s -- models and high-waisted undies.

5. Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach"

Being a dad is hard work, especially when your baby girl's a little tart like Madonna. "Papa Don't Preach" tells the timeless tale of a daughter's struggle to break from her father's demands that she have an abortion, and stick with tradition, have a kid out of wedlock, and let her mom raise it. Maybe papa should have preached birth control. No one's perfect.

4. Violent Femmes' "Gone Daddy Gone"

In this video, we see what happens when dad leaves. The table's a mess, and mom's smoking again. Dad's not happy either. He's just a miserable old drunk. Buy him a few beers and say, "Sorry I was born and ruined your life."

3. The Temptations' "Papa Was A Rolling Stone"

"Papa was a Rollin' Stone" is another tune for the absent father. This one, though, is for that wild and crazy dad you never met, but heard grand tales about. This song could seriously make a dead man move.

2. Neil Young's "Old Man"

"Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin defines what it's like to be a father in America. But this writer prefers Neil Young's "Old Man," which gets the idea across with less detail. You're just like your old man, whether you like it or not.

1. Fire's "Father's Name Was Dad"

This video is just worth a watch in that it's not really worth a watch.

Happy Father's Day!
