Looking for an American holiday in July, to get black-out-drunk and wake up smelling of burritos and urine? Try National Tequila Day this Sunday (plan to call in sick on Monday and Tuesday). In honor of this growing phenomenon,"tequila ambassador" Ron Julio (not to be confused with Don Julio) of adult beverage company, Diageo, shared his insight into their brand Jose Cuervo.
New Times: What is the recipe for the perfect margarita?
Ron Julio: There are many versions of the Margarita, some with sour mix, some without. Some with triple sec, some with Grand Marnier, etc. My personal favorite is: 1.5 oz Jose Cuervo Tradicional Silver, Juice of one lime fresh squeezed, 1 oz Grand Marnier, 0.5 oz agave nectar. Add all ingredients to shaker with ice, shake and add to margarita glass. Salt is optional.
How can superior tequila be differentiated from inferior?
The easiest way to distinguish superior tequila from an inferior one in my
opinion is mouth feel. Superior tequila seems to coat the mouth and be
slightly sweeter than the thinner, spicier ones that I would call of
less quality. This is due to the sugar content of the agave used to
make the tequila. The older the agave, the more sugar and more flavor
and viscosity.
How long has National Tequila Day been in existence and was it the brainchild of Jose Cuervo?
I don't know, but I
wouldn't be too surprised given that the brand essentially created the
tequila industry.
How does Jose Cuervo celebrate National Tequila Day?
To a brand like Jose Cuervo, all year around is
National Tequila Day.
Any food recipes with Jose Cuervo?
My favorites are recipes that call for either vinaigrette
dressings that use tequila for salads or shrimp sautéed with tequila and
spicy chilies.
