Another scorching month in Miami means it’s time for another trip to the movies. If modern movies aren’t your thing, slide on into a classic film at one of your local art theaters. Think your options are limited on that front? Think again! Check out what Miami has available for you.
Miami Beach Cinematheque
In accompaniment with its exclusive premiere of the documentary De Palma, the Miami Beach Cinematheque is presenting a five-film retrospective of auteur Brian De Palma’s early work. The retrospective kicked off in June with Sisters, and continues this month with Carrie on Thursday, July 7 (presented by Rene Rodriguez of the Miami Herald), Obsession on Thursday, July 14 (presented by Hans Morgenstern of Indie Ethos), Dressed to Kill on Thursday, July 21 (presented by Ruben Rosario of Miami Art Zine), and The Fury on Thursday, July 28 (presented by Alfred Soto of Humanizing the Vacuum).
Additionally, the cinematheque will be opening the new 4K digital restoration of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s cult classic, Kamikaze ‘89, on Saturday, July 30. It will run for a week into August. The "Havana Nights:
Coral Gables Art Cinema
Meanwhile, in Coral Gables, it’s a month full of options as usual. The After Hours series, which presents midnight movies on Saturday nights, includes: Dazed and Confused on July 2, Lost in Translation on July 9, Daisies on July 16, The Godfather on July 23, and Pan’s Labyrinth on July 30. All five films are presented on 35mm.
Outside of that, there’s the family-day movie, Babe: Pig in the City, on July 9 and 10, and a couple of one-time-only showings worth checking out. The first is a restoration of the musical Kiss Me Kate in 3D on July 12 and the second is a 4K restoration of William Friedkin’s Sorcerer on July 26.
O Cinema
When it comes to O Cinema and Secret Celluloid Society’s weekly midnight series at their Miami Beach location, five films rule Saturday nights: National Lampoon’s Vacation on July 2, The Karate Kid on July 9, The Neverending Story on July 16, Alien on July 23, and 2001: A Space Odyssey on July 30. All five films are presented on 35mm.
Also showing at Miami Beach is Happy Feet as part of O Cinema's new Family Film Series on July 16. Over at their Wynwood location, they’ve got two classics to show. The first is Popcorn Frights’ 30th Anniversary showing of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 on July 8, and the second is a co-presentation of The Decline of Western Civilization with Sweat Records on July 13. The latter screening will also feature a Q&A with director Penelope Spheeris via Skype.
