Miami is a town with no shortage of things to do. We enjoy beautiful beaches, theater, galleries, and nightclubs. Sports fans have almost unlimited choices. Miami hosts teams in every major-league sport. College sports are strong, too, with UM football and baseball, FIU soccer, basketball, baseball, and more. In August, though, Miami all but shuts down on vacation. The tropical heat and humidity stifles ambition. Only alligators dare venture into the Everglades during daylight hours. What better time for a hockey tournament?
And not that roller hockey business that's so popular down here. But hockey on ice, as the game is supposed to be played. Cool, refreshing ice. The Miami Adult Kendall Tournament is still accepting late registrations. Teams that have already committed to play hail from Canada, Michigan, and Florida's Space Coast, among other far-flung locales. There are two divisions of play: Open (Elite) and (A) Intermediate/Advanced. Local teams need only shell out a very reasonable $600 to play a guaranteed three or four games.

Tournament serves up hopefuls
The race to a number-one ranking in tennis has to start somewhere. If your youngster dreams of playing in big-time grand slams, he or she has to enter competitions. The Clayton Feig Memorial Tennis Tournament, the state's only USTA-sanctioned event in which participants don't pay to enter, is the perfect opportunity to get your little smasher on the ladder to success. Boys and girls 16- and 18-year-old divisions will compete for the accolades and a shot at a state ranking.
