If the walls in Little Haiti could talk, some of the more colorful ones would likely share tales of arduous journeys over rough seas, overcoming strife, assimilation, and community joy. The walls at NE 55th Street and Second Avenue certainly have some crazy tales to tell. Legendary rock club Churchill’s holds down the corner, and next door is Sweat Records, hands down the funkiest music shop in all of Miami. Sweat attracts a hipster crowd with musical interests from hardcore punk to hip-hop, jazz, and electronic music. Outside, musical masters get respect with an awesome, landmark mural. The Wall of Idolatry, painted by amazing local graffiti artist CP1, features astonishing likenesses of an array of music’s most iconic figures. Prince preens next to Iggy Pop. Björk, Bowie, and Billie pose between the helmeted figures from Daft Punk and the impish, animated guys from the Gorillaz. Sweat couldn’t let this monument to music go unheralded, so the official unveiling party begins at 9 p.m. CP1’s canvas works will be on proud display inside the store, and there’ll be DJs, kegs, and cupcakes.
