The gnocchi "Romana" at Cecconi's ($14) is technically a starter, but the extreme weight of each oversized piece announces a much heavier presence in your stomach than the average appetizer. It's baked in a bisque of gorgonzola cheese, stuffed to the limits with a creamy ricotta, and topped with a bountiful layer of parmesan. Thin leaves of crispy sage are buried beneath that cheesy exterior, and every gnocchi oozes beautifully - enough to communicate that you are eating something exceptionally soft and pliable, but not too much so that all of your cheesy filling spills out on to the plate.
There are many pastas to be admired in Executive Chef Sergio Sigala's kitchen, but the sheer luxury of consuming something so decadent makes this gnocchi our most treasured. Order a crisp glass of white wine to cut the heaviness of the dish; we recommend sharing it among like minded individuals who appreciate the fine art of cheese cuisine.
