With little fanfare, demolition began this morning at One Herald Plaza along Biscayne Bay. The iconic Miami Herald building, which served as the newspaper's headquarters from 1963 until last May, when the paper relocated to Doral, was bought in 2011 by the Malaysian casino giant Genting Group.

The company originally planned to build a full-scale casino on the site; those plans have been stalled amid a backlash against the project's size and Tallahassee's resistance to expanded gambling. The company has since proposed other projects, including a condo-hotel-shops combination and a slots-only casino, but it's unclear at the moment what the future holds for the site.
