Boasting the title An American Salute, this concert would surely gain the approval of George Bush. But Democrats shouldn't fear. The hat will not be passed for the Republicans amid the strains of a John Philip Sousa march. The Americans being saluted at this show are composers, creators of what has come to be known as the American Popular Song. Guys like Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, and Hoagy Carmichael, and gals like Dorothy Fields, uh, uh.... Okay, not many women penned classic tunes. Whoever is responsible for the memorable melodies, vocalist Marilyn Horne and pianist Donald Pippin will surely make them shine tonight at 8:00 at UM's Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Dr., Coral Gables. Tickets range from $15 to $25. Call 305-284-4940. -- By Nina Korman

Happy birthday, Madame Blavatsky! It has been 173 years since your birth and there's never been anyone like you. Known mostly as a conveyer of lost wisdom from the East to the West, you sparked what became an ever-growing interest in Eastern religions in America. You even helped revitalize Hinduism in India. Born in Russia, you crossed the Rockies like a pioneer, lived in Tibet for 6 years, traveled the world, learned numerous languages, and all the while spread your ideas of universal brotherhood. Alex Warren of the New Acropolis Cultural Association will speak about your life and writings in the seminar: Helena Blavatsky and the Masters of Wisdom. The talk begins at 7:30 p.m. at 320 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables. Admission is $5. Call 305-461-5758. -- By John Anderson

Tonight he performs with his son José Joel (a Broadway singer), daughter Marysol (a pop chanteuse), and 8-year-old daughter, Sarita. The family affair starts at 8:00 p.m. at the James L. Knight Center, 400 SE 2nd Ave. Tickets range from $39 to $89. Call 305-372-4634. -- By Juan Carlos Rodriguez
