Many a decadent Magic City bash has been declared a success despite the fact that sloshed attendees cant even remember what went down. But Miami-based arts therapy project Local Impact takes the opposite approach. For three months, beginning in January, the nonprofit staged a weekly jam session for Alzheimers patients at the Easter Seals South Florida Memory Gym and documented every minute. Local bands including reggae heads Xperimento, Afrobeat hip-hoppers Locos por Juana, and indie duo the State Of dropped polyglot beats while photographers and filmmakers caught Alzheimers patients foot-stomping, fist-pumping, and generally rejoicing in the healing power of music.
This Thursday, check out the documentary results of Local Impacts collective effort when the one-night art show Medicine to Rock Your Soul rolls into the Miami Science Museum. There will be photos from Lizzie Easton and Dimitri Zvetkov, videos from Revulú, and a psych-folk soundtrack from Arboles Libres not to mention an open bar. Yes, open bar. Theres a suggested $10 donation, especially worthwhile considering the cause. So please leave your usual I forgot my cash con at home.
