Take a look at the sky, or at your social calendar, and a weighty, inescapable fact presses down on you. We’re in the middle of summer, and the heat has dried up many of the usual fun things to do. Summer in the city reduces our population to die-hard locals, and we’re starving for cool events and cultural nourishment. So quick -- grab this morsel before it’s over. Today is the last day of City Theatre’s Summer Shorts at the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts. It’s a theatrical experience you really shouldn’t miss.

The annual celebration of short plays is in its twelfth year, and the lauded company is offering two taut programs of fascinating fare. There is no continuity among the fifteen progressive productions, other than quirky tales, an electric pace, and quality writing. Program A, presented at 3:00 p.m., will feature Jessica Lind’s What I Learned from Grizzly Bears and Pulitzer Prize finalist Rolin Jones’s Ron Bobby Had Too Big a Heart. Program B begins at 5:30 p.m. and will include the Wizard of Oz-inspired Splat!, Sarah Hammond’s Flour Cloud, and Marco Ramirez’s I Am Not Batman.
