Ira Glass was just telling us about psych experiments where baby monkeys were smacked around and rejected by fake moms and then the young primates became obsessed with winning back their robot mother’s love. It was the “Unconditional Love” episode of This American Life and, much like the others in this NPR series of weekly radio programs, it got us all chocked up and blurry-eyed. Glass’s warbled timbre has hosted the show since it premiered in 1995 under the title Your Radio Playhouse. It’s been immortalized in live broadcasts in movie theaters, in comic books, and even on The O.C., where it was referred to as “that show by those hipster know-it-alls who talk about how fascinating ordinary people are.” Ouch. This Saturday at 6:30 p.m., the king of the hipster know-it-alls will discuss the creative process behind This American Life during a fundraiser for Miami’s public radio station, WLRN. But despite its good intentions, One Night Only: Ira Glass threatens to play into the stereotypes about the liberal elite, because very few fascinating ordinary people will be able to afford the event.
