This year’s Miami International Film Festival, which runs Friday to March 13, boasts 100 films from 40 countries, red carpet galas, world premieres, competitions, awards, film seminars, and other stuff to blow your indie-film-loving mind. MIFF kicks off in style on Friday with Chico & Rita, the first opening-night animated feature in the festival's 28-year history. See it at 7 p.m. at Gusman Center for the Performing Arts and then head to an opening night celebration at Freedom Tower (600 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) that begins at 9:30 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for the film and $100 for the film and celebration. The 2011 MIFF also features a seminar with documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (of Super Size Me fame) on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at W South Beach (2201 Collins Ave., Miami Beach). Tickets cost $12. Other festival highlights include screenings of Incendies, Canada’s Academy Award-nominated flick for the Best Foreign Language film category; Magic City Memoirs, a film shot and produced entirely in Miami; and Mooney vs. Fowle, James Lipscomb’s fascinating documentary that takes a candid and searing look at the 1969 high school state football championship that pinned Miami Senior High against Miami Edison Senior High.
