One of the best things about South Florida is that, thanks to the weather, pretty much any summer sport can be enjoyed year-round. Of course, if youre into skiing, thats one of the not-so-great things. But as it stands, its a big reason why the area produces so many standout high school athletes and why so many schools from climes north of, say, Orlando, venture here in December to play in tournaments such as the Junior Orange Bowl Boys Basketball Classic.
This years tourney, held at Miami Dade Colleges Kendall Campus gymnasium, will bring two teams from Pennsylvania Philadelphias Roman Catholic High School and Pittsburghs Mount Lebanon High and Montverde Academy from outside Orlando to face five of the areas best high schools: Coral Reef, Monsignor Pace, Northwestern, Christopher Columbus, and American. The tournament tips off at noon Monday, when Roman Catholic faces Northwestern, and culminates at 8 p.m. Wednesday for the championship game. Tickets cost $5 a game.
