Everything you need to know about Italian cinema you can learn from the 80s classic Cinema Paradiso. Rich people sit in balconies and spit on the lower classes, affairs are consummated in theaters dark corners, priests keep all the raunchy scenes to themselves, and, of course, teens masturbate in the front row. OK, so thats not exactly how we do things in the States, which is why Miamis own Italian Film Festival, voted best in Miami by New Times in 2008, is always an engaging fest.
The ninth edition brings 11 new features, beginning Thursday with Paolo Genoveses Immaturi at 8 p.m. at Regal Cinemas South Beach. The film follows a group of friends fast approaching 40 who must retake a high school test or risk losing their respective careers. They reconnect only to find that their personal lives are mostly in shambles and to discover the real reason they lost touch in the first place. Think The Big Chill minus a suicide. Other festival films include the thriller La Doppia Ora, the action flick 20 Sigarette, and the closing movie Il Padre e lo Straniero.
