Poetry is good for a hell of a lot more than impressing that girl you had a crush on back in middle school. Luckily, the University of Wynwood is here to remind us of all the grown-up reasons to love modern verse. This very poetry-friendly month of April continues Wednesday with a reading by Reginald Dwayne Betts, who’s taking up residency at the Betsy through April 15. Betts produces some powerful poetry, but he’s also a memoirist and activist, serving as spokesperson for the Campaign for Youth Justice, which works to end the practice of sentencing criminal offenders under the age of 18 in the adult justice system. Clearly, this is about more than pretty words.
