In five years the most watched shows in America could emanate from a massive television studio in Doral. No CBS, Fox, ABC or NBC isn't looking to relocate production from Los Angeles. Univision hopes to make those networks irrelevant, and wants to be the number one network in America. That may not be such a wild dream when you consider some projections think 1 in 3 Americans will be Hispanic by 2050.
"We expect to be the number one net in this country in five years," Cesar Conde, Univision Networks president, said during a Q&A session at the National Association of Television Program Executives conference being held this week in Miami according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"What we have to do is Instill that hunger to be number one in our staff and then we have to have flawless execution."
Conde's counterpart at Telemundo, Dan Browne, also feels that Spanish-language television in America has no where to go but up.
Both believe that a focus on original programing, instead of importing shows from foreign sources, will fuel the growth. Which is good news for Miami's economy as both networks shoot most of their productions in Miami Dade County: Univision in Doral, and Telemundo in Hialeah.
"We now produce content and that has made all the difference. Passionate, talented people are now knocking on our door," Browne said.
Both network's Miami station's are competitive with their English-language counterparts in the market. Univision also hit a national ratings milestone this September when for one week when it was the most network amongst the prized 18-49 demo in all of America. On December 28th, thanks to a combination of a Monday Night Football game on Cable and re-runs on most of the broadcast channels, Univision once again became the most watched broadcast channel in America for the night.
