When we founded Miami New Times in 1987, we did so with a mission: to help our readers feel more informed about and connected to this baffling subtropical wonderland. That commitment hasn’t wavered. We believe that being informed means being empowered — and that reputable, independent journalism helps people make smart choices, engage thoughtfully, and connect with their neighbors and the wider world.
Over the last decade, the publishing world has changed drastically, including an industrywide drop in advertising revenue that has shrunk our weekly print edition to 1987 start-up levels. At the same time, our online product has become an increasingly crucial outlet, and an increasingly robust one. (And like the print product, it is and always has been 100 percent free for all to read.)
That said, the kind of journalism we provide costs money to produce. That's why we initiated a membership program six years ago to encourage readers to financially support our newsroom. Since that time, those contributions have allowed us to recruit talented young journalists for paid internships (did you know that Alex DeLuca and Naomi Feinstein were summer interns before they rejoined New Times as staff writers?), add a full-time music editor to our small but mighty team (have you met Flor Franceschetti?), and expand our news coverage.
Over the past year, readers like you have told us you want more coverage that digs into the real‑time forces that affect everyday life. From the politicization of climate science to the human costs associated with the ceaseless cascade of immigration policies, you’ve asked for nuanced, relentless reporting that cuts through the noise.
We’re already delivering the goods, but we need the resources to continue doing it right.
This week, we launched our summer membership campaign, which runs through August 10. Our goal is to raise $6,000 so we can continue to deepen our reporting on critical stories such as Alligator Alcatraz and its impact on South Florida families and the Everglades.
When you support our newsroom, you help to sustain our ongoing commitment to producing independent local journalism that connects readers to the communities around them. Your support allows our newsroom to be on the ground, asking tough questions and highlighting voices too often overlooked. It also helps us connect with you so that we can inform you about special events and other opportunities to interact with our newsroom.
Regardless of whether you choose to contribute, we always want to hear what you have to say: Please don't hesitate to email us and share how our coverage affects your relationship with the cultural oasis we’re all so fortunate to call home.
