Are you ready to samba? Okay, you won’t actually be doing the dancing, but you can still groove in your seat while watching the Brazz Dance Theater perform A Foot for Samba (Pé de Samba) at the Byron Carlyle Theater at 8:00 p.m. Led by artistic director Augusto Soledade, this performance blends Afro-Brazilian and contemporary dance.

“It looks at the historical and social context that surrounds the dance form samba, using that to look at Brazilian culture and the wider society, making it more accessible to people who aren’t Brazilian and don’t know about the culture,” explains Anne Morris, Brazz Dance’s director of development, and a company dancer. Soledade merges themes of playfulness and sensuality with hardship and struggle. “He examines samba and how relevant it is in today’s society by looking at issues of poverty and racism, but the playfulness plays into it as well,” Morris adds.
