It’s about damn time the nine-time Tony Award-winning musical The Book of Mormon made its way to the Adrienne Arsht Center. It’s been three and a half years since the religious satire debuted on Broadway, becoming an overnight phenomenon and being hailed as the funniest musical of all time. But what else would you expect from the creators of South Park?
It took four-time Emmy winners Trey Parker and Matt Stone, along with Tony-winning Robert Lopez (co-creator of the musical Avenue Q) seven years of strategizing the best possible way to laugh in the face of religion without using animated characters. The result is a seemingly straightforward and shrewd plot: Two Mormon missionaries are sent to Uganda to try to persuade locals to join their merry band of believers.
Expect nothing but dry wit, crude language, and dark humor when The Book of Mormon takes center stage at the Ziff Ballet Opera House (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) this Tuesday. Catch the 2011 Grammy winner for best musical any night through December 14. You’ll finally be able to know what the rest of the world is raving about.
