Our friend Kate complains whenever the weather gets too muggy or rainy, or whenever shes had it up to here with Miamis rude drivers. Thats it! Im joining the Peace Corps, shes been known to exclaim. The thing is, Kate knows diddly-squat about the Peace Corps. Same goes for most of the people who talk about signing up to work for this independent federal agency. The first thing Helene Dudley wants Kate and others to know is that the Corps experience is like no other.
Anybody you talk to whos done it will tell you, you get so much more out of it than you put in, assures Dudley, who began her Corps career in Colombia in 1968. Since then she has been to Albania and Slovakia, and now shes back in Miami as president of the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida (RPCVSF). Today from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., over beers and coconut shrimp at Montys, you can learn from others who have had this life-enriching experience. At the Peace Corps happy hour, former volunteers will sip brewskis with all of you newbies who aim to be equally well traveled and interesting. Call 786-543-7087, or visit www.rpcvsf.org.
