Grime may have hatched in East London, but three boys from Manchester are carving out a new place for the dark, dubstep sound. Virus Syndicate is the project of MCs Goldfinger, JSD, and Nika D, and producers MRK1 and Plasticman. When Planet Mu Records released Virus Syndicates debut album Work Related Illness in 2005, UK hip-hop wasnt all that grimy. The crews choppy, off-centered beats and syncopated garage-tinged rap sounded fresh. But now its six years later, and grime is so expected from the Brits it verges on stale. Yet the groups recent Breakout Trilogy has been lauded by the BBC, particularly tracks Talk to Frank, and Move It, which samples Reel 2 Reals ear worm I Like to Move It. Get infected with Mancunian lyricism and chest-pounding bass when Virus Syndicate and MRK1 stop in at Get Low at the Vagabond this Thursday.
