Jewish people have faced persecution around the world for centuries, and Florida was no exception. They weren’t allowed to live as Jews in Florida until 1763 — the state was owned by Spain from 1513, so it was “for Catholics only” for 250 years. The first Jews settled in Pensacola after the Treaty of Paris turned Florida over to England. Locals can learn more about this rich history through Florida Jewish History Month, which traces the state’s early Jewish roots all the way to the changes that eventually led to 16 percent of America’s Jewish population living in Florida. A kickoff celebration of the 12th-annual Florida Jewish History Month honors the Jewish pioneers of Miami Beach with a panel discussion featuring Seth Bramson and Abe Lavender, who will talk about the historic Jewish families of Miami Beach and the Jewish Museum of Florida’s former synagogue buildings. The free event, which includes a complimentary slice of key lime pie provided by Joe’s Stone Crab, begins at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Jewish Museum of Florida, 301 Washington Ave., Miami Beach. RSVP by calling 786-972-3175 or emailing [email protected]. S
