There is nothing as exhilarating as a heart-fluttering, vertigo-inducing ride on a hot air balloon. Floating in a basket high above the treetops with a burner and a billowing rainbow of fabric above your head is freeing, if a bit frightening. This weekend you can experience the sights without having to leave the ground during the 23rd annual Sunrise Community Balloon Race at the Kendall Tamiami Executive Airport. The nonprofit Sunrise Community hosts this yearly event to raise awareness of its programs that provide services to people with disabilities throughout Florida and the Eastern United States. The event opens at 6:00 a.m., and balloons are scheduled to launch at 6:30. A pancake breakfast and other family activities continue until 9:30 a.m., and the event will reopen at 3:00 p.m., followed by a second balloon launch at 5:30. There will also be another morning launch Sunday. Admission and parking are free, but donations are always welcome. If you’re up for an adventure, you can register online to win a balloon ride for two. Call 305-275-3317, or visit www.sunriseballoonrace.org.
