Get Wiggy with It

MOCA's DeLuxe exhibition

FRI 2/11

Manipulating pages from magazines such as Our World, Sepia, and Ebony, artist Ellen Gallagher deftly combs through issues of race, identity, and transformation with irony-streaked, wigged-out results. In her show "Murmur and DeLuxe" at the Museum of Contemporary Art (770 NE 125th St., North Miami), Gallagher liberates characters from the pages of old photo magazines, revitalizing them with mixed-media makeovers using plasticine, coconut oil, toy eyeballs, and crystals.

The exhibit features Gallagher's new multiple portfolio DeLuxe and a series of five 16mm film projections (Murmur) created with Edgar Cleijne. The large-scale DeLuxe is a suite of 60 framed multiples -- some depicting women with eyes obliterated and with flamboyantly sculpted yellow wigs -- combined to tensely weave individuality and conformity. Treat yourself to Gallagher's witty alterations of consumer culture during tonight's opening reception from 6:30 to 9:30. Admission is free for MoCA members; $15 for non-members. The exhibit runs through March 27. Call 305-893-6211, or visit www.mocanomi.org. --Carlos Suarez de Jesus
