For years Miami-born novelist Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta mystery novels have been burning up the best sellers lists, but the effort to get them to the box office has been a long one. After attempts to get Jodie Foster and Demi Moore to star in adaptations in the '90s, the popular fictional detective is finally coming to the big screen played by none other than Angelina Jolie

Though not based here, Cornwell's novels have occasionally used her hometown as a backdrop, and like the author, the fictional medical investigator also hails from Miami.

The film, which could start shooting this fall, won't be directly adopted from any of the 17 novels in the series. Instead it'll be an origins story set in the present day. No word on whether Scarpetta's Hollywood origins will still involve Miami or feature the city in any way... though we'd love that. If it happens, we just ask, for the sake of avoiding puns, the plot doesn't involve Scarpetta dining at the Fontainebleau restaurant of the same name
