The headline pretty much sums this one up, so let's just cut to the chase, shall we? The cop, fortunately, is OK. The crazy homeless guy with the rock, fortunately, is subdued and off the street.

On to the gory details. Around 10 this morning, according to a release sent to the New Times, someone called Miami police to report that an irate man was throwing rocks at passersby near a Sunoco Gas Station at NW 54th Street and N. Miami Ave.

Police pulled up to the station at 10:22 . Somehow, the homeless man -- whom police have not identified -- charged one of the cops -- whom police have also not identified -- and smashed a brick-sized rock into the back of his head. The cop was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in serious but stable condition.

The homeless guy, who has a history of mental illness according to Napier Velazquez, an MPD spokesman, was arrested without further incident and charged with aggravated battery and assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

But considering that the police haven't even been able to get the homeless man's correct name because of his "mental condition," you have to wonder whether those charges are going stick.
