HIV/AIDS took the spotlight in the early Nineties with movies such as Philadelphia and TV shows including The Real World San Francisco, presenting us with a reality no one wants to face. Our sunny city has some bleak statistics regarding AIDS, with the highest rate in the nation, and ranking third in the number of people living with the disease. For more than 20 years, Care Resource has been providing our fellow Miamians with exactly that — a resource of information and medical attention as well as a caring environment for those who need it most. With help from sponsors and volunteers, Care Resource is hosting AIDS Walk Miami today.

The 3.1-mile trek begins and ends at the Miami Beach Convention Center, and as a special treat, a postwalk party will be held at the neighboring Miami Beach Botanical Garden. There’s no registration fee, but walkers are encouraged to raise at least $50 each. For you lazy bones, Miami-Dade Transit is providing free transportation for participants. Registration begins at 8 a.m.; stretching and walking starts an hour later; and the party gets going at 10. Visit www.careresource.org.
