On November 21, 2006, a 25-year-old woman named Doris Jiménez was raped and strangled at Sol Fashion, the clothing boutique she owned in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. The same day, her American ex-boyfriend, Eric Volz, a relatively wealthy and successful magazine editor, was 55 miles away in the capital of Managua. Yet despite eyewitness accounts, cell phone records, and computer logs proving his alibi, Volz was targeted, arrested, and put on trial. There was no DNA evidence and really no evidence at all, except for the testimony of Nelson López Danglas, a beach bum who’d been one of the early suspects in the murder. It took only three days for Judge Ivette Toruño to find the American guilty, sentencing him to 30 years in prison.

Now, two and a half years after being freed from his cell, Eric Volz will visit Books & Books to present his terrifying personal account of wrongful conviction in a foreign country, Gringo Nightmare: A Young American Framed for Murder in Nicaragua.
