South Beach might be the clubbing capital of the world, but North Beach could be challenging its southern brother for title of most culturally significant neighborhood on all Miami Beach.
Not even two months after the Byron Carlyle Theater got a major boost with news that award-winning Broward Stage Door was expanding and moving to the theater - they've already had a successful run of Suds - the neighborhood scored another cultural victory with news that a completely renovated North Shore Bandshell will be reopening Sept. 9.
It took nine months of work but the bandshell is now ready to retake its
place as prime cultural venue in North Beach. The upgrades include
restoring the historic bandshell, expanding backstage facilities,
installing better acoustic plaster so audiences can actually hear what's
playing, as well as putting in better theatrical lighting and cool
architectural features.
The City of Miami Beach paid for the improvements and as cities like to
do they'll be holding a (wait for it...) a ribbon cutting ceremony at 7
p.m. to remind us that no matter how cool the bandshell might now be,
government can still make something look lame with a goofy ribbon
cutting event. (We do look forward to seeing those huge scissors popular
during such ceremonies and will be disappointed if they use regular
size ones.)
But even if you're not a fan of bureaucratic pomp and circumstance,
you'll want to show up for the September "Movie in the Park" series to
be held at 7:30 p.m. It's free and concessions will be sold. Between the
Movie in the Park series and the Soundscape movies at the New World
Center, Miami Beach residents should never pay to see a flick again.
