Of all the world’s sundry Tiki events, Fort Lauderdale’s Hukilau is one of the holiest. This year’s ninth annual fest will begin Thursday at 5 p.m. with Harold Golen’s “Poly Blend” art show at the Bahia Mar Hotel. At 8 p.m., the party will move poolside at the Bahia Cabana Hotel (3001 Harbor Dr., Fort Lauderdale), with performances by the Woggles, the Intoxicators!, Elena the Hula Hooper Extraordinaire, and Marina the Fire-Eating Mermaid. The next day will feature a Tiki bazaar with souvenirs and vendors from around the world, a history seminar, and a night of music by the Neanderthals, Sweet Hollywaiians, Stolen Idols, Walk the Plank, Candy Del Rio, and Reverend Valentine. Then, on Saturday, there’s a so-called Tikimentary on the Polynesian pop movement (didn’t it start with the annexation of Hawaii?), not to mention the Sarong-a-Thon as well as a whirlwind of mingling and drinking at South Florida’s kitschy Tiki cathedral, the Mai-Kai.
