Arrrrrgh! We’ve been pillaging and plundering for hundreds of years, and now everyone wants to be a pirate. (Arrr! That damn Johnny Depp! Oh, but he’s a looker, all right.) Sure, you can put on a puffy shirt, stick a parrot on your shoulder, and wear a trendy skull-and-crossbones scarf, but you will never be a true buccaneer until you’ve walked a mile on our peg legs. If you want to swashbuckle with the best of them, head down to the Keys today through Sunday for the Pirates in Paradise Festival.

The krewes who survive the National Walk the Plank Championships (4:00 p.m. at the Pier House Resort and Caribbean Spa) will gather on the beach with National Weather Service meteorologists for the Official End of America’s Hurricane Season Party. Hurricane warning flags will be burned, and storm-theme games will be played to raise money for hurricane relief programs. Admission is free. Many seafaring activities, including wooden-boat-building demonstrations, buccaneer bashes, and excursions, are scheduled throughout the weekend. Landlubbers can stick to the Fort Taylor Pirate Fest, Pirate Pub, and Village Thieves' Market.
