Miami's Best Eats and Drinks This Weekend: Labor Day Grilling, Bacon, and Meatballs

Welcome to the unofficial last weekend of summer. To most of the world, this means getting the last beach weekend in before nine months of having to wear wooly sweaters and down jackets. To us, it means glorious 70-degree days are soon to come.

Miami does have one thing in common with our northern neighbors -- a three-day weekend! There's so much planned, you've got to have that extra day to pack it all in. From a master grilling class to a meatball giveaway to a celebration of bacon, here are our picks!

Get Your Grill On

Channel your inner grill master this Saturday, August 30, and get some awesome tips from BLT Prime at Trump National Doral's chef Dustin Ward. Starting at 2:30 p.m., chef Ward will demonstrate everything you need to know to wow people with your barbecue technique. In this three-hour class, Ward will show you how to make a three-course meal by demonstrating both in the restaurant and on the patio's outdoor grills. Fifty dollars includes the class and lunch. Space is limited and reservations are required. Call 305-591-6606 to secure your spot.

Celebrate National Bacon Day

National Bacon Day. Just the sheer awesomeness makes our hearts go pitter-patter. We suppose you could celebrate with supermarket bacon, but why would you when some of the best artisan bacon is made right here in Miami?

Proper Sausages offers three kinds of house-made bacon, made with Berkshire pork bellies. The Proper is spiced with sage, maple, and black pepper; the Italian has a special blend of herbs and garlic; and the Dub gets its kick from habanero, thyme, and allspice. They're all $16 per pound. Proper Sausages is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Want more bacon in your life? Proper Sausages is also offering a special bison and bacon burger ($6.50 a patty) and dub-bacon popcorn. That's popcorn cooked in dub bacon fat, in case you were wondering.

Labor Day Weekend Barbecue at Broken Shaker

What says "long weekend" more than a barbecue pool party? If you don't have a pool, come out to Freehand Miami on Sunday, August 31, for Broken Shaker's own barbecue pool party. They'll be punch and barbecue specials and an epic battle between DJs Ess & Emm and Kosher & Pickle.

Menchie's Asks, Are You a Cookie or a Cream Person?

The debate is as old as time itself. When eating an Oreo, do you prefer the cream filling or are you a fan of the cookie outside? On Monday, September 1, Menchie's Frozen Yogurt is asking you to take sides with the debut of two new flavors -- Just the Cookie and Just the Creme (priced at 51 cents per ounce). Can't decide? Swirl both for total Oreo immersion. We won't tell.
