East Side Pizza on NE 79th Street claims in green, yellow, and white paint on one of its windows that it serves the "Biggest Slice in Miami."
How true is that statement?
There is no denying that Flora's East Side Pizza serves up a helluva slice of pie. In fact, East Side's slice is equivalent to two slices anywhere else. Well, almost anywhere.
Having grown up on Casola's Pizza in southwest Miami, right off South Dixie Highway and SW 17th Avenue, I fondly recalled another Siamese slice served in the 305 and wondered if a slice from East Side Pizza really outdid my favorite overgrown slice of pizza heaven.
Nothing spurs a reporter more than investigative journalism, except maybe pizza, so I went on a covert mission to discover the truth, personal safety be damned.
Both slices can be had for about $3.50, and both are huge. Both Casola's and East Side's slices have thin dough and are light on the sauce and heavy on the cheese. And both give each other a run for the money when it comes to flavor -- easily some of the best-tasting slices in town.
After being handed a slice by East Side employee Harley Becerra and then purchasing a slice at Casola's, I compared the two. I admit I did not use a standard ruler, but rather the length of East Side's menu (which also happens to be the exact width of the crust of one of East Side's slices).
After comparing the two slices, I have to say that East Side's claim is false. The slice from Casola's was slightly larger.
But the two slices are so similar I had to wonder: Does size really matter? I determined that my future slice-eating decisions would hinge on location, location, location.
