We could take the easy way out and tell you Los Dictados del Fuego is a play about lesbian nuns set in 1667. That alone might be enough to make you want to see it. Just to clinch the deal, we should also mention the mother superior herself experiences a potent orgasm onstage. But that would be a disservice not only to the two incredible actors who carry the play but also to the play’s muse — legendary 17th-century scholar and poet Juana Inés de la Cruz.

Set in a convent, Los Dictados de Fuego revolves around an emotional and cathartic discussion between Juana (Sandra Martinez) and her mother superior (Adela Romero). Both women put on such intense performances that even without a fluent understanding of Spanish and without superscripts, you’ll understand their pain. Watching Los Dictados de Fuego at Artspoken is like having a religious experience.
