As Hurricane Milton is set to make landfall along Florida's Gulf Coast as a catastrophic hurricane, Florida officials are urging residents along the southwest coast to follow the mandatory evacuation warnings.

The Category 5 storm, which is expected to make landfall as a major Category 3 or 4 storm near Tampa Bay, could bring storm surge, heavy rain, flash flooding, and high winds along its path through Florida.

“If you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you’re going to die,” Tampa Mayor Jane Castor told CNN on Monday.

The National Hurricane Center warns that some areas of the state could see rainfall amounts of up to 15 inches and storm surge as high as 15 feet. President Joe Biden fears Milton could be one of the worst storms to hit Florida in 100 years.

If you are at risk and live in an area under a mandatory evacuation order, do not attempt to ride out the storm. You can stay up to date about the current conditions and Milton's impacts by tuning into live cameras throughout the state.
