While geographically one of the southernmost cities in the United States, Miami isn’t usually identified as being a “Southern” town.
Which is why it’s a well-deserved surprise that Southern Living‘s May issue names Miami one of the “10 Tastiest Towns in the South.”
Though Miami isn’t number one (Durham, North Carolina, took that honor for its “scrappy scene of artisans devoted to coffee beans, brews, and the craft of humble foods”), it’s in good company alongside some serious food destinations such as Austin, Charleston, and New Orleans.
The cities named were the results of a online survey conducted on southernliving.com, where more than 300,000 consumers voted for their favorite city from January 10 to February 28.
The magazine’s editorial staff then fleshed out each city’s “star tastemaker,” best bites, and favorite nightcap.
Southern Living calls Miami
“a culinary Mrs. Robinson (mature, refined, sexier than ever) with a
Southern accent” and recommends the deviled eggs ($10) with fresh dill
and smoked trout roe at Yardbird Southern Table & Bar, the kimchee
fried rice with pork belly and pineapple ($16) at Pubbelly, and the pork chop al pastor with black bean sofrito and polenta ($36) at
the Dutch as the “best bites” in our town.
Bloom’s Tequila Beets
cocktail ($11), made with tequila, lime, house-made chamomile syrup,
roasted beet juice, and bitters was singled out as the city’s best
nightcap, and Michael Schwartz was named Miami’s star tastemaker for his
“understanding that less is more.”
