96. Sakaya Kitchen's Brussels Sprouts
Sakaya Kitchen's humble green balls of deliciousness are the sprouts that launched a thousand ships. Well, maybe not literally. But if there's a current local craze for this unfairly maligned vegetable, much of the credit can go to Richard Hales' rendition at his casual Midtown spot.
The sprouts here are light years away from the slimy boiled cafeteria version that's earned them their bad rap. Instead, Sakaya cooks them at high temperatures until they're brown and caramelized, but still firm, and smothers them in a mountain of fresh ginger. The result is sweet, spicy, and savory all in one vitamin-packed bite, making for an addictive side dish that regularly sells out at the restaurant's mobile truck, Dim Ssam a Gogo.
