THUR 9/4

Face it, Miami has become an awards show mecca. The Source Awards, the BMI Urban Awards, the MTV Latin Music Video Awards, and finally the Latin Grammys have all graced us with their presence. Last year lovely Little Haiti welcomed the supremely politically incorrect Crack Rock Fest. Well, put on those tuxedos and evening gowns again, folks. Coming at you this time around is the Little Haiti Gram-E Awards at Churchill’s (5501 NE 2nd Ave.). Part of the annual Miami Rock Festival, the Gram-Es emanate from the twisted mind of musician Steve Toth, a.k.a. Mr. Entertainment, who promises he and his band the Latter Day Pookiesmackers will make any of the crowd’s favorite substances disappear — in one-gram increments, of course! Joining Mr. E. and Co. for onstage antics will be MC Boise Bob, the Gruntled, Xela Zaid, and the Laundry Room Squelchers. Call 305-757-1807 for details. — By Nina Korman

Big white teeth, purple socks, “Puppy Love,” a little bit rock and roll, Mormon, game show host. If those clues bring Donny Osmond to mind, you have the brains to be a contestant on Pyramid, the game show which Osmond now emcees. (How the mighty have fallen!) Fortunately for you, Pyramid producers and Donny too are coming to town to recruit players during a Pyramid City Sweep. Auditions will go on at the Aventura Mall (19501 Biscayne Blvd.) from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and producers promise that at least one — one! — South Floridian will appear on the show. If watching is your bag, local celebrities like cheery weather chick Gina Cancelliere and radio DJ Footy will compete for fun in a live version of the game. Call 800-722-5528 or see www.pyramidgameshow.com to register, or just show up and fill out an application. — By Nina Korman

Glamour Resurrected

When an explosive era can be captured in the short life of a New York City nightclub, the dusting of glitter and nostalgic notions of glamour are left as residue. Artist Doug Meyer delves into this phenomenon with his work “BOD” (Broadway on Duany), in which he depicts the early days of AIDS and disco with an installation that marks the last days of debauchery as the last days of freedom. “BOD” and “In Defiance of Gravity and Other Matters” open at 7:00 p.m. at Rocket Projects, 3440 N. Miami Ave. Admission is free. Call 305-576-6082. — By Juan Carlos Rodriguez

Explain this one, Naomi Wolf. Why in this supposedly evolved post-Beauty Myth society is the standard of loveliness the blow-up doll or the hoochie mama? Current icons of beauty include hipless, peg-legged, bodacious ta ta-ed Pamela Anderson, and bringing up the rear is a slimmer-butted J.Lo, or J.Ho to her detractors. Does true power mean that ordinary women want to look like you? Beats us. Our idea of power is more Madeleine Albright than Malibu Barbie, but we haven’t begun to stock up on brooches just yet. At Wise Women Weekend, taking place from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through tomorrow at the Radisson Deauville Hotel (6701 Collins Ave., Miami Beach), Wolf will open festivities with a talk titled “Women as Change Makers: Integrity, Leadership, and the Real Power.” Doubt if Jenny from the Block will be mentioned, but who knows? Actress Erin Gray, who endured domestic violence during childhood, will also speak. Event proceeds benefit the Advocate Program, Inc. Registration costs $325. Call 305-672-7759. — By Nina Korman

More than a Doodle

Although contemporary artists might work with car parts, refrigerators, and ceiling fans, chances are they got their first inkling about art from drawing. It’s the basic building block, kind of like the DNA, of an artist. In the age of conceptual art, drawings are often relegated to sketches, a part of the process as opposed to a finished piece. In his current show “Draw! Draw! Draw!” gallery owner Fredric Snitzer makes an homage to the basic discipline of image making. He’s exhibiting works from José Bedia, Luis Cruz Azaceta, John Espinoza, David Humphrey, Gean Moreno, and newcomer Jiae Hwang, all of whom work in various mediums from video to painting to sculpture. “Draw! Draw! Draw!” runs through Monday, September 29, at Fredric Snitzer Gallery, 3078 SW 38th Ct. Admission is free. Call 305-448-8976. — Juan Carlos Rodriguez

Author speaks the unspeakable

Award-winning investigative reporter Edwin Black digs deep into issues that mainstream society is most comfortable ignoring. In his 2001 best seller, IBM and the Holocaust, he documents the 12-year relationship between Big Blue and Hitler’s Third Reich. In his latest work, War Against the Weak, Black digs into eugenics, the pseudoscience popular in the early 20th Century that promoted the creation of a white master race. He appears at 7:00 p.m. at Temple Israel, 137 NE 19th St., Miami. Admission is free. Call 305-573-5900. — Juan Carlos Rodriguez
