Miami, get ready to call your mother.

Call Your Mother, the wildly popular “Jew-ish” bagel shop and deli known for its colorful shops, stacked sandwiches, and seriously good bagels, is officially coming to South Florida.

Owners Daniela Moreira and self-proclaimed “Chief Doughboi” Andrew Dana will open their first Florida location on Miracle Mile in Coral Gables in early December, Dana exclusively tells New Times.

And in a way, the Washington, D.C.-born deli has been trying to get here all along.

Call Your Mother

A D.C. staple inspired by South Florida

Long before Call Your Mother grew to dozens of locations across the country, South Florida was woven into its identity.

Dana grew up visiting his grandparents in Boca Raton and Delray Beach several times a year, eating at Jewish delis with his grandfather and falling in love with a place that would eventually help inspire his own restaurants.

“I’ve always loved South Florida,” Dana tells New Times. “My grandparents lived in Boca and Delray. I just spent a ton of time down here, and I love it. It’s just always calling my name.”

South Florida was a long time coming

In 2021, when Call Your Mother had grown to about five or six shops and was ready to enter a second market, Dana came to Miami looking for real estate.

“It was a crazy time in Miami in 2021. There was, like, no real estate to find,” he says. “So we toured it, like, three, four times, just couldn’t find anything, and we’re like, ‘Oh, shoot, I guess it’s not the right time.'”

The company went to Denver instead. But Miami never really left Dana’s mind. About a year ago, he decided it was time to try again, helped along by one particularly brutal D.C. winter. “It was also cold as shit all winter in D.C. last year,” Dana says with a laugh. “And I was like, ‘I need some sunshine. I need the Sunshine State.'”

Dana returned to South Florida last December and finally found the right spot on Miracle Mile in downtown Coral Gables, in the former Bodega space.

The team is now working through plans for the restaurant and hopes to begin serving bagels shortly after this Thanksgiving, with an early December 2026 opening planned.

Although Coral Gables isn’t known for loving colorful spots, subtle isn’t exactly the Call Your Mother way. “We are going to make it as funky as we possibly can. So there will be some pink, there will be some yellow, and there will be some teal,” Dana says. “And then when you step inside, it’s gonna be real crazy.”

Boca Raton meets Brooklyn

For Miamians discovering Call Your Mother for the first time, the deli may look curiously right at home here.

Dana’s childhood trips to visit his grandparents in Boca and Delray shaped some of his earliest memories of bagels and Jewish deli culture.

“I would say a lot of my bagel upbringing was visiting my grandparents and going to TooJays and Three G’s, eating with my grandfather. He was eating tongue sandwiches, which I thought was totally insane, but I was eating my regular bagels,” he says.

When customers would ask Dana what Call Your Mother was supposed to feel like, his answer was simple: “I always said our vibe is sort of Boca meets Brooklyn.” And its menu is just that.

Sandwiches named after SoFlo retirement communities

That South Florida influence is everywhere. Call Your Mother’s sandwiches are even named after South Florida retirement communities, including the “Glen Eagles,” named for the community where Dana’s grandparents lived.

Even the little details lean into Florida, with manatees and flamingos appearing throughout the brand’s colorful identity. “We’re totally inspired by that leisure lifestyle,” Dana says.

In fact, the colors and menu came before Call Your Mother even had a name. “We had the colors and the menu before we had the name,” Dana says. “Like, I knew it was going to be South Florida-inspired. We’ve always had South Florida in us, and now it’s time we brought Call Your Mother to South Florida.”

Seriously, call your mother

One night, Dana asked friends to come up with something funny their Jewish mothers or grandmothers might say. His friend’s sister suggested, “Call your mother.”

“It was like fireworks went off in my brain,” Dana says. “And I texted my wife, and I said, ‘It’s Call Your Mother.’ And she was like, ‘That seems literally insane, but I love it; let’s do it.'”

The name may have been born from Jewish family life, but Dana quickly realized it crossed cultures. “It’s so classically Jewish, but it also spans all cultures, right?” he says. “Like, my wife’s from Argentina and her mom runs it.”

That melting pot of cultures within its own branding is enough to resonate with Miami customers.

First come eggs, then comes marriage, then come bagels

Call Your Mother is also a love story. They are truly bae-goals. Get it?

Dana and Moreira met at a farmers market in 2015 while reaching for the last carton of eggs. Dana ran a pizza food truck, while Moreira worked as a private chef. Both wanted the eggs. “We decided to split the carton of eggs, and I went back to my original pizza business partner, and I said, ‘That’s what I want my wife to look like,'” Dana recalls.

She later joined the pizza business part-time. “She fell in love with the brand, we fell in love with each other, and here we are,” Dana says. The couple opened Timber Pizza together (which earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand) before selling bagels at a D.C. farmers market in 2017. The first brick-and-mortar Call Your Mother followed in 2018.

Moreira also brings serious culinary credentials. She’s a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), was named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list, and was recognized by the James Beard Foundation as a Rising Star Chef semifinalist.

Therefore, this ain’t your average deli and bagel shop.

When a New York bagel and a Montreal bagel fall in love

Moreira had never eaten a bagel when Dana first proposed opening a bagel restaurant. So they traveled to New York, Montreal, South Florida, and San Francisco to figure out what theirs should be.

“What we loved about New York bagels is their texture, the crust on the outside, and the soft insides,” Dana says. “And what we loved about the Montreal bagels was the sweetness from the honey.”

Their solution? “We were just like, ‘What happens if these two, you know, fall in love and have a baby?'”

Call Your Mother’s bagels land somewhere in the middle, with the crust and soft interior Dana loved in New York and a touch of honey sweetness. “We have honey in the bagel, and then we boil it in honey, too, to give it a touch of sweetness, which we think makes it pretty nice,” he says.

The menu is incredibly innovative and fun, including the “Grandezza” made with turkey, mozzarella, pesto, and red pepper relish

Things get wild between the bagel halves

Moreira’s Argentine background and lack of attachment to traditional deli rules helped make the menu considerably more playful. During their farmers market days, nectarines and jalapeños from neighboring stands inspired a cream cheese that eventually became part of the “Delray Club,” piled with bacon and potato chips.

“We’re always just sort of innovating and seeing what kind of interesting toppings we can put on,” Dana says.

Miami will get favorites including the “Delray Club,” made with bacon, jalapeño, nectarine, potato chips, and peach cream cheese on a plain bagel. There’s also the “Jetski” with brisket, pastrami, sofrito, cheese, and jalapeño on a cheddar bagel, along with the “Sun City” breakfast sandwich.

Call Your Mother hopes to expand across South Florida in the future

The bagel expansion is just getting rolling

Dana says the company would eventually like to expand to Miami Beach, too. “I think we’re definitely going to open more stores down here,” he proclaims.

And just to make sure it’s a hit, they’re even moving down themselves for the opening. The couple plans to pack up the family and trade the upcoming D.C. winter for Miami while they get the first Florida shop off the ground.

“My wife and I are going to move down here for the winter to make sure this shop is getting the appropriate love and to make sure the bagels are perfect,” Dana explains. “And if it goes well, and we enjoy ourselves this winter, we’re just going to move the damn family down here.”

(We don’t blame him.)

Plus, for Moreira, Miami offers a place where their children can grow up surrounded by Spanish, Argentine food, and family traditions that feel familiar to her own upbringing.

“We cannot stop smiling about spending more time here,” adds Moreira in a statement. “We want to soak up the sun, meet our neighbors, eat across Miami, learn from the people who have been feeding the city for years, and build shops that are genuinely useful to the communities where they open.”

So, after years of South Florida inspiring Call Your Mother from hundreds of miles away, the bagels are finally coming home. And the whole entire family might be next.

After all, they have already survived enough D.C. winters (if you know, you know).

“I need Miami to save me,” he ends with a laugh.
