After what organizers billed as a larger-than-life Barbie Dream Fest manifested as a sparsely decorated, borderline nightmarish event in Fort Lauderdale over the weekend, organizers are working on issuing full refunds to the poor souls who bought tickets at a price tag of $30 to $450. Mattel, meanwhile, seems to be pointing a plastic finger at the company it licensed to throw the bash.
Event organizer Mischief Management, which licensed the famous doll brand from toy makers Mattel, made the rare decision over the weekend after posts about the dismal treatment of the iconic doll went viral across social media. Sponsors and organizers of the event, which was the first (and maybe last?) official Barbie festival licensed by Mattel, sold the weekend as a fabulous affair drenched in pink. But depictions of the event showed an almost bare, concrete-gray conference center with a few splashes of Barbie-pink here and there and very few experiences set up for attendees.
Scores of attendees dressed in glittery pink outfits flew from all over to Fort Lauderdale and began posting about their dismay almost immediately after the event began on Friday, with many apparently feeling they didn’t get “Kenough” for their money and comparing it to the infamous Fyre Fest in the Bahamas and Willy’s Chocolate Experience in Glasgow.
AsToldByLasso on X (formerly known as Twitter) was in good humor about the event, writing, “I had an excuse to finally wear my Barbie Movie era clothes. So grateful for the friends I made, but high-key I deserve to be humiliated for trusting anything Mattel does.”
And mere hours after the event ended Sunday night, Mattel issued a statement to New Times seemingly blaming Mischief Management for the event’s botched execution.
“Barbie Dream Fest was created by Mischief Management, which licensed the Barbie brand from Mattel,” a Mattel spokesperson said in a statement to New Times. “We are working with Mischief Management, who are managing attendee feedback and issuing full refunds to everyone who purchased tickets. We want every fan experience to be an excellent one.”
Mischief Management quickly made the decision to refund not just the guests who paid hundreds to attend all three days, but everyone who had bought tickets, according to a statement sent to New Times.
“Mischief Management is incredibly grateful to everyone who joined Barbie Dream Fest. We appreciate the passion and engagement from the Barbie community. Bringing fans together—alongside Barbie role models, designers, partners, and global icons who embody the true spirit of Barbie—was at the heart of this event. Barbie Dream Fest was created as an intimate fan convention designed to foster meaningful connection, inspiration, and closer access to Barbie and her world. We will be providing full refunds to everyone who purchased tickets,” a spokesperson said in a statement to New Times.
