Degeneration was born. The new bimonthly party invades the Garret (697 N. Miami Ave., Miami) every first and third Thursday of the month and features resident DJs Mixx Piggy and Blah Blah spinning all your faves, from the aforementioned Smiths to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Dead Kennedys, the Presets, Joy Division, and more.
“The whole point is just to get people on the dance floor singing and dancing to songs that you connect with,” Torres says, adding they’re playing a lot with décor and visuals to separate the Degeneration’s vibe from that of popular existing nights such as Peach Fuzz Fridays and Bodega Saturdays.
Dance, drink, and be ironically apathetic with free drinks until midnight, all-night $4 shot specials, and $8 beer and shot combos. The party starts at 11 p.m., and there’s no cover. Call 305-377-2277 or visit grandcentralmiami.com.
Stephanie Torres works with PopLife, which comes with a few perks, an obvious one being that she has some hand in the event planning of the Garret’s gritty yet chic loft space above Grand Central. Recently, this came in handy.
“My friend came from out of town, and we didn’t really know what to do,” Torres says. “We wanted to go out dancing, but we just wanted to dance to the Smiths and there was nowhere to do it. My other friend Lauren and I started talking, and that’s when we said, ‘Fuck it. Let’s throw our own party.”
