During our meeting, the subject of Burger King’s new delivery service came up. While the service, still in its beta test phase doesn’t deliver to all of Miami, the Miami New Times was, indeed, in a delivery zone.
It was decided then and there that a group of food bloggers would have a communal lunch of burgers, chicken nuggets, and french fries. With that, I proceeded to place the order. Here’s what happened:
11:30 a.m. – I call the Burger King delivery line, where I’m prompted to
press “1” for a new order and “2” for questions. Almost immediately, a
friendly person came on the line and welcomed me to the BK order line.
After asking me if this was my first time using the system, she
pointed out a few things:
- There is a $10 delivery minimum for delivery
- There is a $2 delivery fee
- The delivery person does accept tips (good to know, because Burger King in-store employees can not accept gratuities)
- Almost every item on the Burger King menu is available except for ice cream, kid’s meals, and a few others
With
that, she asked if delivery was to a house, apartment, or business and took down my details. Apparently, once you’re in the
system, the information is saved. I initially
wanted plain cheeseburgers, but they weren’t available, so I opted for
three Whopper Jr’s with cheese, three plain Whopper Jr.’s, a 20-piece
chicken nuggets, and two orders of fries (which come in one size only —
medium).
11:35 a.m. – The order was confirmed (you can pay by
credit card in advance or cash), and I was given a reference number and
told my food would take 20-30 minutes to arrive.
11:50 a.m. – The food hasn’t arrived yet.
12:00 p.m. – Nope. Getting hungry.
12:15 p.m. – Co-workers turning into rabid zombies.
12:25 p.m. – I’m about to call to see what’s taking so long, when the food arrives. It comes in the typical delivery insulated carrier, but the actual food packaging was quite different.
Designed to keep the food warm for at least 30 minutes, the packaging also ensures fries and nuggets stay crisp, and buns don’t get soggy.
Fries and nuggets are boxed the same. And yes, everything was crispy.
The burgers were packaged in black plastic clamshells, making them look a little like a Darth Vader happy meal.
Open up the black clamshell and you find this.
Open it up once again, to reveal the other half of the bun and non-wilted lettuce. Some of us remarked that this was genius while the rest noted all this plastic has got to be terrible for the environment.
In conclusion, the Burger King delivery service still has a few kinks to iron out (an hour’s wait is unacceptable), but if you’re in the delivery area, terribly hung over, and it’s raining outside — this is an option worth exploring.
