In a state where the sun shines but the slang might make you squint, Florida's most-searched terms in 2024 show we're all keeping up with a wild mix of quirky words and viral internet trends.

Unscramblerer.com, a website that helps people solve word games like Scrabble, Words With Friends, and  Wordle, took time out from its day job to crunch Google Trends data to track terms and search phrases from January to October, spotlighting the weird and playful slang people just can't get enough of.

What did they find when they narrowed things down to Florida? Let's just say the top ten results ranged from skibidi to womp womp but were unfailingly demure.

1. Demure

Thanks to TikTok sensation Jools Lebron, "very demure" took a cheeky turn. While traditionally about being modest and shy, Jools' twist has her judging how "appropriately" dressed her viewers are, making "demure" a new kind of fashion check.

2. Sigma

Forget about "alphas" — the sigma types are taking over. This one's for the "lone wolves" who refuse to follow the pack. The sigma is that independent, self-reliant character who prefers to ride solo on life's cultural roller coaster.

3. Skibidi

You're right on track if you're thinking of dancing heads and singing toilets. "Skibidi" refers to pure internet chaos in the form of bizarre, animated videos that hook viewers with surreal humor and leave them thinking, "WTF did I just watch?"

4. Hawk Tuah

For those who live under a rock, "hawk tuah" is that spitting sound one uses to make a man "go crazy" when performing fellatio, as immortalized by Hailey Welch, the virally legendary 22-year-old from Belfast, Tennessee, who used to work in a spring factory but how hawks tchotchkes on her own website and has her own podcast.

5. Schmaltz

Well, here's an old chestnut! We've all rolled our eyes at an overly sappy song or a movie that goes heavy on the drama, right? That's "schmaltz" in action. In Yiddish, it means chicken fat. In slang, it's long been the way to describe something that has crossed the line from heartfelt to cornball. Why is it new now? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

6. Sobriquet

Straight from the French, "sobriquet" means a nickname. While we might use "pet names," this is for those who want a bit more style — like a label upgrade. Again, one that's been around for a long time. Since the 17th Century, to be precise, when it was a French word, soubriquet, which meant a "chuck under the chin." You learn something new every day!

7. Preen

A noun, not a verb. Picture a kid who tries to dress older than they are. A preen is a youngster who's adopting an adolescent look a tad early. You know: teen vibes with a touch of parental side-eye.

8. Katz

This is all about good vibes. When something is katz, it's fun, it's pleasing, it's a resounding "yes!" It may be No. 8 on Unscramblerer's Sunshine State list, but consider it Florida’s feel-good term of the year.

9. DEI

Diversity, equity, and inclusion gets a nod in its abbreviated form at No. 9. DEI may be a term that feels more formal and less loaded than "woke," but if this qualifies as slang, all we can say is...womp womp.

10. Womp Womp

Sometimes things go wrong — and when they do, "womp womp" is here to capture the letdown in sound form. The virtual sad trombone is taking off as the go-to expression for disappointment (with a dash of humor).
