On Sunday, June 15, Pompano Beach rapper Kodak Black, a proud father himself, is hosting a special event at his alma mater, Blanche Ely High School (1201 NW Sixth Ave., Pompano Beach). The event is billed as a "Father's Day Jeep Tailgate," and all South Florida dads are invited to join. Fathers accompanied by their children will be granted free admission.
A press release announcing the event contained scant information about what will go down this Sunday afternoon.
"The Father's Day Jeep Tailgate brings together fathers, children, and families to celebrate the importance of fatherhood in a unique and energetic setting. Attendees can look forward to a day filled with exciting activities, including a Jeep show, games for the kids, BBQ from local vendors, and live music performances," the press release promises.
"Father's Day is a special occasion that allows us to recognize and appreciate the pivotal role fathers play in our lives," Black is quoted as saying. "I'm excited to host this event and create an unforgettable experience for families to celebrate together."
Whether Kodak himself will perform remains to be seen.
You'd be forgiven if the idea of Kodak Black celebrating Father's Day seems counterintuitive. After all, New Times has long chronicled his run-ins with the law, beginning with a 2015 arrest on kidnapping and battery charges when the then-aspiring rapper was 18 years old.
But it's worth noting that Kodak's not just a rapper known for his many viral moments and legal issues; he's also a father of five children: King Khalid, Queen Yuri, Princess Isabella Ann, Prince, and Prince Vulture. Sunday's event might be an opportunity for Miamians to see a different side of the Sniper Gang member, who often hosts community events in his hometown.
For this one, he invites all comers to enjoy "a day filled with fun, food, and family. Show off your grilling skills, enjoy music, games, and more."
Though Kodak has yet to release the follow-up to his 2023 album, When I Was Dead, he has been busy musically. In 2024, he released the mixtape Trill Bill and collaborated with Don Toliver on "Brother Stone" and Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign on "Field Trip" from Vultures 2.
Earlier this month, he dropped a compilation, Zap Stars, featuring tracks by him and his Sniper Gang collective. The release marks the members' first group project since 2021's Sniper Gang Presents Syko Bob & Snapkatt: Nightmare Babies. He has also dropped several tracks this year, including "Cluck," "Nann Nigga” featuring Taylor So Made, and "Yellow Brick Road."
