Early voting begins this morning in what might be the most important midterm election of our lifetimes. With Florida’s environment hanging in the balance and the majority on the line in not only the state Senate but also U.S. Congress, this year will likely be historic. Not only that, but a proposed change to the state constitution could forever substantially rebalance the st

Here’s a Recent History of FIU Students Being Racist and Awful

Florida International University students really can’t seem to stop themselves from being gigantic assholes. From frats to campus conservative groups to, ahem, other campus-conservative groups, New Times keeps catching FIU kids acting like complete garbage. In recent years, FIU President Mark Rosenberg has had to suspend Greek Life on campus, college…

South Florida Cops Filmed Repeatedly Punching 14-Year-Old Black Girl

There is virtually no reason for a group of large adult male cops to pin a 14-year-old girl to the ground and continully punch her in the ribs and kidneys. Yet after Coral Springs Police officers were filmed doing exactly that to a teen outside the Coral Square Mall yesterday, the police department is now trying to defend itself and callously throwing the teen under the bus for somehow provoking the beating.

Judge Rules Hollywood PD Shouldn’t Have Arrested Gay Men for Private Sex Acts

A Broward County judge has confirmed the Hollywood Police Department ruined the lives of ten gay men for no reason at all. This past July 26, Hollywood PD raided a gay-cruising hangout and arrested eight men allegedly caught masturbating in a private backroom and two others accused of performing oral sex on each other. The police department then sent the men’s photos and names to the media, and many outlets happily blasted out the men’s identities. One man said he was outed and fired from his job as a result.

Miami Artist Crowdfunds Gun Reform Billboard Along I-95

Stuart Sheldon’s oldest son was in elementary school the day 20 children were gunned down in their classrooms at Sandy Hook Elementary. The idea of someone aiming an AR-15 at first-graders was the worst thing Sheldon could imagine, and when nothing changed in its aftermath, he responded the best way he…

FIU Professors: Kick TPUSA Off Campus for Racist Comments, Rape Jokes

This past Tuesday, New Times published internal chats showing members of the Florida International University chapter of Turning Point USA joking about white nationalism, “Jew-hating,” underage cartoon porn, and Syrian refugees raping white women. But so far, school administrators have done nothing. In fact, amid a national outcry over the leaked, racist chats, TPUSA even set up a table on the FIU campus today to hand out buttons and “Socialism Sucks” posters.

Betsy DeVos’ Family Gave $200,000 to Ron DeSantis’ PAC

The collection of ultrarich vampire people known as the DeVos clan has risen again from its dank cellar to put its collective thumb on the scale of Florida’s gubernatorial race. According to political action committee records, four members of the DeVos clan, including Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ husband, Richard M. DeVos Jr., donated a total of $200,000 to the Friends of Ron DeSantis PAC October 11.

Miami-Dade Employee Says She Was Sexually Harassed at Ceremony Honoring Women Leaders

On March 21, 2012, Beverly Washington — a high-ranking supervisor in Miami-Dade’s solid waste department — left work and headed to the Biltmore in Coral Gables to attend “In the Company of Women,” the county’s annual ceremony honoring women leaders. But despite the messages of female empowerment that night, Washington says a male colleague, Michael Moore, used the opportunity to sexually harass her, whispering “kiss me” and attempting to lick her ear.

FPL and Republican PACs Are Funding Misleading Anti-Gillum Facebook Ads

For years, a 501(c)(4) “dark-money” nonprofit called Florida Strong has been supporting Democratic candidates across the state. Though the secretive group has been more than deserving of its own criticism over the years, there’s apparently now a second and perhaps even more shady organization called “Florida Strong” now funded by right-wingers operating…

The Marlins’ Weird, Awful Home-Run Sculpture Is Officially Leaving the Ballpark

Installing a whirling, neon home-run sculpture in cavernous, empty Marlins Park felt like putting one of those wacky, waving, inflatable tube men inside a funeral parlor. When the mediocre Marlins actually smashed a homer, the gizmo’s fish would dance, music would play, and basically no one would ever be there to witness it. It was perpetually dancing in a void, begging for one person to notice it.

Panama City’s Poor Suffer Most in Michael’s Aftermath

Hurricane Michael ripped a hole in the roof of Amy Bauer’s tiny apartment in Springfield, a poor Panama City neighborhood. An administrative assistant in her early 50s who gets paid by the hour, she met the storm with no cash on hand, no extra food, no batteries, no flashlights…

Florida Mom Sues Juul Because Her Teenage Son Can’t Stop Vaping

J.Y. and his mother, Barbara Yannucci, filed a class action complaint against Juul Labs, Inc. last week in Florida’s Southern District Court. Yannucci is suing the e-cigarette maker for fraud, unjust enrichment, failure to warn, and negligence. The case represents the latest in a string of lawsuits that have been filed against the San Francisco-based company in the past year, with consumers claiming the nicotine within Juul’s cigarettes is more potent and addictive than advertised.

Chats Show FIU Turning Point USA Members Sharing Racist Memes and Rape Jokes

Back in 2017, New Times obtained screenshots of gross chats among Florida International University’s Campus Republicans. They joked about the Charlottesville neo-Nazi attack last year and threatened to “call ICE” on fellow, undocumented students who were begging Congress to pass the DREAM Act. Now, New Times has received chats from another FIU…

Video: Miami-Dade Cop Hits Handcuffed Suspect in Face

Miami-Dade County cops burst into the home of 18-year-old Bryan Crespo last March to arrest him for allegedly stealing airbags from local cars. But according to surveillance video New Times has obtained, an MDPD officer identified as Sgt. Manuel Regueiro decided to wallop Crespo in the face after he…

Five Heinous ICE Arrests in South Florida This Year

Immigration and Customs Enforcement is an agency dedicated to kicking poor immigrants out of the country. ICE functions with even less oversight than local cops and a mandate to just wantonly kick brown people out of America. Studies show deportations have no impact on the U.S. crime rate! And that…
