Friday July 11

Nothing’s worse than being a prehistoric gill man dwelling in an Amazonian lagoon all alone. Where’s a good woman when you need her? Why, she’s in a boat skimming the surface of your watery home among a group of scientists on a fossil-studying expedition. Your sly ploy to seduce the hot momma? Allow yourself to be captured, and then grab her and go. She’ll be unable to resist your scaly charm. This is what you’d do if you were the saturated sad sack known as the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Filmed in Florida, the 3-D horror classic screens at 11:00 tonight in the Knight Center’s (400 SE 2nd Ave.) Ashe Auditorium as part of the Rewind/Fast Forward Film & Video Festival. Tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. the besotted beast is shipped off to an aquarium in 1955’s Revenge of the Creature. Admission is $5 per movie. Call 305-375-1505. — By Nina Korman

Ooo-ooo that smell, can’t you smell that smell? That would be the odor of Jim Beam and skunkweed wafting above Lynyrd Skynyrd’s 30th anniversary tour. The paragons of Southern rock are still at it after all these years, all those albums, a tragic plane crash, exploding drummers, and amps to 11 (oh wait, that was Spinal Tap). With their recent album, Vicious Cycle, in hand, the ensemble takes to the road once again for a 26-city U.S. tour that stops in Pompano Beach. Hear long-time frontman Johnny Van Zant churn out the hits, sing along to “Sweet Home Alabama,” and shout “Free Bird!” between songs. And bring your flag because Skynyrd is all about the war in Iraq, and presumably still mad at Neil Young. Lynyrd Skynyrd appears at 8:00 p.m. at the Pompano Beach Amphitheatre, 1801 NE 6th St. Tickets range from $41 to $46. Call 954-523-3309. — By John Anderson

Film – The Wizard Returns

Although Harry Potter gets all the attention nowadays, in 1939 a Kansas girl named Dorothy entered a colorful world of Hollywood magic. The Shores Performing Arts Theater (9806 NE 2nd Ave., Miami Shores) presents 2 fundraising showings of The Wizard of Oz on its big screen. A costume contest at 1:00 p.m. precedes the family matinee. At 8:00 p.m., it’s the adults’ turn to arrive in costume for the 8:30 p.m. screening. The matinee costs $5 for children, $10 for adults. The evening show is $20.
